Build Day 11- Propshaft and Diff

Day 11- Propshaft and Diff

Propshaft

Finally the right propshaft has arrived so we spent a few hours this evening putting it in and bolting in the diff. Firstly sliding in the propshaft took only a couple of minutes as it slides right in. If we had known how easy it was before then we wouldn't have spent so long trying to put the last one in.

Fits right in no trouble.

Limited Slip Differential

On the other hand the diff was slightly harder to fit due to the small amount room between the mounting bracket and the chassis. We lifted the diff with the trolley jack, which in the end wasn't quite tall enough to get it into place so the last centimetre had to be lifted into place by hand, then a long screwdriver was inserted to pin it in place.

Using a tape covered file to lever the diff in order to get the washers in.
Initially we had a lot of trouble getting the bottom bolts in so we decided to put a chamfer on each end, like on the top bolt (already done by Caterham) in order to get the washers on then into the thread on the diff bracket. After this it was much easier to get the bolts in and done up. We then propped up the diff with an off cut of wood in order to bolt through the top. The top washers were much easier to place from above, through the boot floor with the wooden panel removed, using a screwdriver to get the washers aligned. (Edited by Dad, I think we should confess to having spent quite a lot more time on the bottom bolts than we should have, due to "us", (that's the royal version of me), using washers, a size smaller than the bolt!!!).

Putting the chamfer on the bottom bolts using the bench grinder.

Two nuts retained on bolt in order to re shape the thread.
